When I began my adventures in the cleaning industry I was a certified rookie and I was pretty clueless about cleaning. Today we are going to go through some of the mistakes I made early on, and focus on some tips and tricks to help you clean better and more efficiently!

Experience by Misadventure

What first inspired me to write this article was a near injury where I almost tripped backward over a chair that was right behind me. This brings us to our first point, always know your surroundings.

It’s good to get into the habit of assessing every room before you clean it. This not only allows you to clean more efficiently but it will also tell you where to be cautious, what spaces to avoid, and where any pitfalls might lie. Try flipping chairs on tables or moving furniture out of the way before you clean, as it will allow you to mop and sweep without banging into anything.

One & Done

Cleaning can be extremely frustrating because it often seems like the job is never-ending. If you find yourself cleaning the same surface over and over, try rethinking how you approach the job.

First, make sure to pre-treat dirty surfaces before you go in to wipe them down with a cloth or rag. Let the product soak into the mess, pre-treat, and then give it a good scrub. This will result in a faster and better clean every time!

Next, make sure to use the S pattern when wiping or scrubbing down a surface. When tackling a room, consider working from top to bottom and left to right. Follow these simple rules and you’ll cut your cleaning time in half! Here are 5 Minute Cleaning Jobs for more hacks! Less time cleaning with better results?? I’d say that’s a win-win!

Empty Your Vacuum

This is something that I am always reminding people of because it is often overlooked. Before every vacuum session, empty the canister completely. This will allow your vacuum to suck better and it will cycle a lot less dust in the air.

Dry Clean Only

In the professional cleaning world, there is something called dry cleaning. If you attack a dusty surface with a wet cloth you’ll simply be making a bigger mess. It clumps up, gets sticky, and is 10 times harder to clean. So, always start with dry cleaning your surfaces, and then you can go in and wipe them with a damp cloth.

Use a ‘Coaster’

One thing that all pro cleaners know is how awful it feels when you get a stain on a surface from a product that you’re using. It can be rough because if it happens on a natural stone surface or a delicate upholstery, it can cost thousands to fix.

The way I avoid this is by using the ‘coaster’ method. Find something that you can easily port around, like a small plate, plastic bag, or even a cleaning caddy. This will allow you to bring around your cleaning products while avoiding spills and avoiding damaging stains.

Clean Your Way Out of the Room

We all know that little twinkle toes walk that we do to get out of a corner we just mopped ourselves into. Not the best approach. Instead, always orient yourself to the opposite of the room’s exit point before you start mopping. That way you mop yourself, vacuum yourself, or sweep yourself out of the room, instead of into the corner!

If I can get you to clean like a ninja, then I’ve done my job. Hopefully, this will help you get started with a new way to clean!
