Kitchen cabinets can get quite dirty over time from spills, splashes, and greasy or dirty fingers. The challenge becomes not only how to clean kitchen cabinets, but also how NOT to clean kitchen cabinets. Sylvia asks a good question:

What’s a good way to clean kitchen cabinets without doing damage to the stain/finish?

Melissa Says:

Like many spots in the home where grease and/or odors are a challenge—but we still need to be mindful of the surface—I turn to my cleaning superhero: enzyme cleaners! My personal favorite is Bac-Out by Biokleen; it doesn’t use harsh chemicals (it’s derived organically from fruits and vegetables), and it’s nonabrasive—a must when it comes to cabinet finishes! Don’t ever (I mean ever!!) use abrasives on cabinet doors—you’ll ruin the finish if you try using something like an eraser sponge or powdered cleanser.

Enzyme cleaners essentially eat their way through any stains or greasy residue. The key with enzyme cleaners is dwell time. You need to let them sit to do the work. The longer they remain, the better they work. My recommendation is to apply a generous amount of the enzyme cleaner, let it sit for at least 5 to 10 minutes, then wipe the surface clean with a microfiber cloth or sponge.

Hope that helps!

  1. Hiya from London, UK! I love your YouTube vids and addicted to watching and learning from them! Just wondering if you know a UK version of the enzyme cleaning product you mention? 🙂
    Thanks Sarah

    • Thank you for your kind words. We aren’t familiar with UK products but if you go on Amazon or check your local cleaning aisle we’re sure that you will be able to find an enzyme cleaner. Sorry we can’t be of more assistance. Best of luck 🙂

  2. Bought your book and keep it on my kitchen counter to use as a constant reference. Even after keeping house for 58 years, you’ve taught me new and time saving steps to taking care of my home. Thanks again
